COVID-19

Recently, Appalachian Medical Professionals partnered with Community Connections Inc. to help our community better understand important healthcare issues affecting our region. We're also teaming up with area pastors to help them get trustworthy answers to questions their congregations may have about COVID-19 vaccinations. In these uncertain times of the pandemic, we believe it is more important than ever that people have accurate and reliable information about how to protect their health and the health of those they care about most.

With all that science and scientists still have to learn about the COVID-19 pandemic,

  1. COVID-19 is a new coronavirus. It is spread from person to person by microscopic respiratory droplets containing the virus. These tiny droplets are expelled from our noses and mouths whenever we cough, sneeze, speak and sing. Sometimes a person may be infected with COVID-19, and not even know it or feel sick. That is why it is so important for us to wear a multi layered fabric mask around people who might be infected with COVID-19, especially when we are indoors. A mask worn over the nose and mouth reduces the chance of inhaling the virus from the air around us and becoming infected with the virus. A properly worn mask also reduces the chance that someone infected with COVID-19 might spread it to their loved ones and others.

  2. Increasing the distance to 6 feet or more from any infected individual, and limiting exposure time in an enclosed space to 10 minutes or less, is another important way to reduce your chance of inhaling COVID-19 and becoming infected yourself.

  3. Although the virus can survive outside the body for a few days, it is very fragile. COVID-19 can be destroyed just by washing your hands with soap and water or disinfecting them with alcohol based hand sanitizer. Hard surfaces can be disinfected by wiping them with dilute household cleaning solutions.

  4. And here's the best news: All the vaccines that are currently available in the US have been shown to be safe and highly effective at preventing the serious consequences and death from COVID-19 infection.

this is what we know for sure right now:
